Here's What's Changed in Gay Mykonos for 2026
We're saying this upfront because nobody else will: Mykonos is still excellent for gay travellers, but it's not the same island we first visited in 2017.
The number of exclusively gay hotels has declined as venues adapted to attract broader markets, and Super Paradise Beach is now 70% straight despite Jackie O' Beach Club still operating there. The actual gay scene has consolidated around Elia Beach and Mykonos Town nightlife.
Peak season hotel prices have jumped 22% since 2024. We're seeing €315/night as the summer average versus €260 two years ago. The €180-250 sweet spot for decent gay-friendly hotels near town? Gone. You're now looking at €280-450 for equivalent properties.
Here's what hasn't changed: Elia Beach remains Europe's best gay beach with proper queer atmosphere, the water is still absurdly clear, and XLSIOR festival (20-25 August 2026) brings 30,000 circuit boys who take over the entire island for six days.
The reality? Mykonos delivers if you're after luxury beach life with guaranteed gay atmosphere at Elia, serious nightlife during XLSIOR, and that specific Cycladic aesthetic everyone photographs. It's expensive, increasingly mainstream at certain beaches, and requires strategic timing to get value.
We're breaking down exactly which hotels justify their prices, which beaches are still properly gay, and how to navigate XLSIOR booking without paying double.
Where to Stay: Best Gay Hotels in Mykonos Town
Book Mykonos Town (Chora) to be within 5-10min walk of all gay bars. This matters because the last bus from beaches leaves at 5-6pm, and taxis after midnight cost €25-35 to beach hotels.
Axel Beach Mykonos
The only dedicated gay hotel brand in Mykonos (just like its https://boyfriendswhotravel.com/stays/best-gay-hotels-berlin-2026#purpose-built), 31 rooms ranging from garden view to private pool suites. We didn't stay here but walked through during our September visit and spoke with the front desk about 2026 bookings.
Location is 8min walk from Jackie O' Town Bar, 12min to Little Venice, 20min to Fabrika bus terminal for beach buses. The Skybar pool area is the social hub where you'll meet other guests, and it's properly gay-focused, not just gay-friendly.
THE DETAILS:
- Rates 2026: €280-450/night standard rooms, €550-850 for private pool suites
- What's included: Breakfast, pool access, wellness area with gym
- Gay atmosphere: 8/10, genuinely gay clientele not just LGBTQ+ welcome sticker
- Book by: March for July-August, January for XLSIOR week
- Walking times: Jackie O' 8min, Babylon 10min, bus to Elia 20min walk + 25min bus
vs Other Options: You're paying €100-180/night premium over gay-friendly hotels like Elena Mykonos (€180-280) for guaranteed gay environment. Worth it if you want to meet other queer travellers versus staying somewhere you'll be the only gay couple.
WORTH IT? Yes if you're solo or want immediate gay social scene. Skip if you're a couple who'll spend days at Elia Beach anyway, you're paying for atmosphere you won't use.
Elena Mykonos
Smart mid-range choice in Mykonos Town, 5min walk to gay bars, 5min to Megali Ammos Beach. We met a couple from London staying here who praised the value versus nearby properties charging €100+ more for similar rooms.
Standard rooms are modern, clean, no thrills. You're paying for location not luxury. The restaurant serves decent Greek food at €18-28 for mains, which is reasonable by Mykonos standards where you'll see €35-45 elsewhere.
THE DETAILS:
- Rates 2026: €180-280/night standard, €250-380 sea view
- What's included: Buffet breakfast, WiFi, 24hr front desk
- Location score: 9/10 for accessing everything
- Book by: February for peak season decent rates
vs Axel Beach: You're saving €100-170/night but staying at a gay-friendly hotel rather than gay hotel. The trade-off is you won't have built-in social scene with other gay guests.
WORTH IT? Absolutely for couples wanting central location without premium gay hotel prices. Skip if you need pool, spa, or social atmosphere, this is purely functional base.
Myconian Kyma (Luxury Option)
We walked past this numerous times, it's perched above the windmills with ridiculous Aegean views. Not specifically gay but heavily gay-frequented due to proximity to Little Venice and Jackie O' which is 5min walk downhill.
This is Design Hotels collection so expect that aesthetic, infinity pool overlooking harbour, Satori Thalasso Spa with five therapy pools. You're paying €450-850/night because it's genuinely beautiful and walking distance to everything.
THE DETAILS:
- Rates 2026: €450-650 standard, €650-850 sea view, €1,200+ suites
- What's included: Breakfast, spa access, pool, Design Hotels membership perks
- Gay scene: 7/10, lots of gay couples but not exclusively gay
- Book by: December for July-August, October for XLSIOR
vs Staying Near Beaches: You're paying €200-350/night more than beach hotels but saving €20-30/day in taxi costs to town for nightlife.
WORTH IT? Yes if you can afford it and prioritise Mykonos Town nightlife over beach proximity. Skip if beaches are your main focus, you'll resent paying luxury prices then spending days 25min drive away.
MyCocoon Hostel (Budget)
The island's only proper gay hostel, opened 2017 in central Chora. We visited in 2017 on our first Mykonos trip and it was basic but social. September 2025 reports indicate it's held up well.
Don't expect luxury, this is 4-6 bed dorms and some private rooms. The value is location (8min to Jackie O') and meeting other gay travellers at similar budget levels. Common area gets social in evenings before people head out.
THE DETAILS:
- Rates 2026: €45-70 dorm beds, €90-140 private rooms
- What's included: Basic breakfast, WiFi, lockers, communal kitchen
- Social atmosphere: 8/10 for meeting people
- Book by: Now for XLSIOR, 2 months ahead for July-August
WORTH IT? Best budget option for solo travellers or those prioritising social scene over comfort. Skip if you need privacy, proper sleep, or you're over 40 and done with hostel life.
Beach Hotels: Near Elia and Super Paradise
Only book beach hotels if you're renting a car or happy with limited nightlife access. The last bus from Elia to town leaves around 5-6pm, taxis cost €25-35, and you'll miss the 11pm-2am bar scene.
Due Mari Mykonos (Near Ornos)
Best value near beaches, located in Ornos which is 8km from Elia Beach (15min drive), 3km from Mykonos Town (7min drive). We saw this during our car rental day and noted good reviews from gay couples online.
Sleek Cycladic design, private terraces, pool area with Aegean views. The staff offer advice on beach timing and will book yacht rentals if you're feeling flush. Breakfast included which saves €15-22 per person daily.
THE DETAILS:
- Rates 2026: €151-280/night depending on season
- What's included: Breakfast, pool, private terraces, some rooms with plunge pools
- Elia Beach: 15min drive, 45min walk (not realistic in August heat)
- Mykonos Town: 7min drive, 25min walk
- Book by: February for summer
vs Town Hotels: You're saving €80-150/night versus Axel Beach but adding €20-30/day in transport. Break-even if you're spending 3+ days purely beach-focused.
WORTH IT? Yes if you've got a car and prioritise beach over nightlife. Skip if you want to bar hop, you'll spend your evenings calculating taxi costs rather than enjoying yourself.
NOMAD Mykonos (Kalo Livadi Beach)
Proper luxury near several XLSIOR venues (4 events happen in Kalo Livadi during festival week). We didn't stay but it's been recommended by multiple couples we know who've done XLSIOR.
14 suites with private pools or jacuzzis, Italian-Greek fusion restaurant on site, 5min walk to beach. During XLSIOR this becomes unofficial party hotel headquarters. Off-season it's romantic escape.
THE DETAILS:
- Rates 2026: €739-1,200/night regular season, €1,500+ during XLSIOR
- What's included: Breakfast, private pool/jacuzzi, spa treatments, restaurant access
- XLSIOR advantage: Walking distance to 4 festival venues
- Elia Beach: 6km, 12min drive
- Book by: October 2025 for XLSIOR (probably already late)
vs Town Luxury: Similar prices to Myconian Kyma but beach-focused location. You're choosing between town nightlife or beach/party access.
WORTH IT? Absolutely for XLSIOR week if you can book it. Outside festival, only if you want isolated luxury and won't need town access.
The Gay Beaches: Elia vs Super Paradise Reality Check
- sunbeds
- €15-25 for 2
- water
- €3
- lunch
- €18-35
Europe's best gay beach where 90% of the crowd is queer and the far right section is clothing optional
- Best for
- Gay beach enthusiasts, nude sunbathers, meeting international travellers
- Skip if
- You need constant shade or can't handle 20min walk from car park in August heat
- Don't miss
- The nude section over the rocks to the far right, rainbow flag marks the spot
Let's clear this up because every outdated guide still lists Super Paradise as the main gay beach. It's not. That changed around 2019-2020.
Elia Beach: THE Gay Beach

Elia is now the favourite gay beach where gay travellers prefer to spend their days, with the far right section (when facing sea) being 90% queer and clothing-optional accepted.
We spent three full days at Elia in September. Walk right past all the sunbed sections, past the watersports rental, until you see the rainbow flag. That's where you want to be. Continue even further right over the rocks and you'll find the properly nude section between Elia and Agrari beaches.
THE DETAILS:
- Sunbeds: €15-25 for two loungers with umbrella
- Food/Drink: Beach bar serves lunch €18-35, cocktails €12-16, water €3
- Facilities: Showers, toilets, changing rooms, watersports rental
- Transport: 10km from Mykonos Town, 25min by car, infrequent bus (every 2hrs from Old Port)
- Parking: Free car park behind beach, arrive before 11am in peak season
- Crowd: 90% gay on far right, mixed in main sunbed area
- Best time: 2pm-5pm when crowd peaks, rainbow flag flies, everyone's out
Getting There:
Bus departs Old Port terminal roughly 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm (check current schedule, it changes). Return bus last service around 5-6pm. If you miss it, you're walking 25min uphill to road then negotiating taxi.
vs Super Paradise: Elia has the actual gay atmosphere Super Paradise lost 5 years ago. The crowd is predominantly queer, the nude section is properly nude, and you'll meet travellers from across Europe not Instagram influencers.

WORTH IT? Absolutely. This is what you came to Mykonos for. Budget full days here, bring snacks and water to save money, and don't leave before 4pm when afternoon crowd arrives.
Super Paradise Beach: What Happened
Super Paradise is no longer predominantly gay, those crowds have moved to Elia, though it remains popular with gay men in late afternoon for Jackie O' Beach Club.
The beach was 70% straight couples and families, 30% gay men, despite Jackie O' Beach Club operating on the far right. The party atmosphere is still there, music starts pumping at 4pm, but it's not a gay beach anymore.
Jackie O' Beach Club charges €20 per person for sunbeds (not €20 for two like elsewhere). Add €18-28 cocktails and €35-65 lunch, you're spending €80-120 per person for the day. Pink Beach next door charges €19-29 for two sunbeds, better value.
THE DETAILS:
- Jackie O' sunbeds: €20 each (€40 for couple)
- Pink Beach sunbeds: €19 for two front row, €29 for second row
- Cocktails: €18-28 at Jackie O', €14-22 at Pink Beach
- Crowd: 70% straight, 30% gay despite Jackie O' presence
- Transport: 15min drive from town, shuttle bus from Fabrika terminal (every 2hrs)
- Parking: Free but arrive early, very limited spaces
Why It Changed: New developments around the beach cut off quiet corners, mainstream party scene took over, Instagram culture attracted straight crowds to "the famous Jackie O' club", and the gay community moved to Elia for actual queer space.
vs Elia: You're paying double for sunbeds, drinks, and food to be somewhere that's no longer predominantly gay. Unless you're specifically meeting people at Jackie O', skip it.
WORTH IT? Only for Instagram bragging rights that you went to "famous Jackie O'." We'd skip unless someone you're meeting insists on Super Paradise. Elia delivers better gay atmosphere at half the cost.
Agrari Beach: The Quiet Alternative
5min walk from Elia over rocky path, smaller beach with some gay sunbathers who couldn't find space at Elia or prefer quieter atmosphere. We walked over on our second day when Elia was packed.
The nude section between Elia and Agrari (accessed from either beach) is the cruisiest spot on the island. It's a small cove with space for roughly 50 people, everyone's nude, crystal clear water with what locals joke is leftover glitter from last night's clubs sparkling in the sand.
THE DETAILS:
- Sunbeds: €15-20 for two
- Restaurant: One beach taverna, good reviews
- Transport: Via Elia (no direct bus), or 25min drive from town
- Crowd: Mixed with some gay sunbathers, quieter than Elia
WORTH IT? As an Elia overflow option or if you specifically want quiet. Don't make this your only beach day, you'll miss the proper gay scene at Elia.

XLSIOR Festival 2026: Dates, Prices & Booking Strategy
XLSIOR Festival 2026 runs 20-25 August drawing up to 30,000 people for six days of circuit parties across multiple venues. This is Europe's premier gay party week alongside Circuit Barcelona.
We haven't done XLSIOR (not our scene) but we've spoken to many people who haveand it always gets great reviews.
Festival Dates: Thursday 20 August through Tuesday 25 August 2026
Main Events:
- Opening Party: Thursday 20 August, typically at Cavo Paradiso, €40-60 entry
- Beach Party: Saturday 22 August, 3,000+ people at Elia Beach, €30-50 entry
- WE Party: Sunday 23 August, main event 6,000+ capacity, €50-80 advance tickets
- Pool Parties: Daily at various hotels, €25-40 entry
- Closing Party: Tuesday 25 August, €40-60
Booking Strategy:
Book by January 2026 or pay the consequences. Hotels triple their normal rates during XLSIOR week. That €280/night Axel Beach room? Now €650. Elena Mykonos jumps from €220 to €480.
Festival passes sold through xlsiorfestival.com starting November 2025. Full week pass: €280-380 depending on how early you book. Individual event tickets: €30-80 each.
THE DETAILS:
- Accommodation: Book September-December 2025 for anything under €500/night
- Festival passes: Released November, full week €280-380, individual events €30-80
- Flight costs: Expect 40-60% premium for that specific week
- Total budget: €2,500-4,000 per person for 6 nights including everything
Hotel Strategy During XLSIOR:
Stay in Mykonos Town if you plan to party hard, most events end 6am-8am and you'll want bed nearby. Beach hotels mean €40-50 taxis at 7am when you're exhausted.
MyCocoon Hostel (€120-180 dorm beds during XLSIOR) is budget option but books out by December. Axel Beach is XLSIOR headquarters where everyone meets. Due Mari Mykonos or beach properties work if you've rented car and prefer quieter mornings.
vs Regular Mykonos Visit: You're paying €1,500-2,500 more for accommodation + festival tickets versus visiting June or September. The trade-off is guaranteed massive gay crowd, proper circuit party production, and meeting 30,000 other gay men.
WORTH IT? Yes if you're into circuit parties and that's specifically what you want. Skip if you prefer relaxed beach holiday, you'll hate the crowds, noise, and constant party pressure. June or September gives you excellent Mykonos at half the cost.
Gay Nightlife & Social Scene
Mykonos Town nightlife starts late. People arrive at Jackie O' around 10-11pm for cocktails, move to Babylon club at 1-2am, then some continue to after-parties at private villas or late bars.
Jackie O' Town Bar
The main gay bar everyone passes through at some point in their trip. We went three times across our September visit, once as reconnaissance, twice properly.
It's on Mitropoleos Street in Little Venice area, 10min walk from main taxi rank. The terrace gets packed after 11pm with mixed crowd, strong cocktails, cruisy atmosphere without being explicitly hookup bar.
Cocktails are €16-22 which is expensive but standard for Mykonos, you'll pay €12-18 at less premium venues. Beer is €10. The staff are genuinely friendly, remembered our order second visit, and offered solid advice on which beach party to hit next day.
THE DETAILS:
- Opening hours: 6pm-3am, gets busy after 10pm
- Crowd: Mixed gay men 25-55, busiest Thursday-Sunday
- Drinks: Cocktails €16-22, beer €10, no cover charge
- Music: House and pop, not club volume
- Best night: Saturday when everyone's in town
Our experience: Thursday night was quieter, good for conversation and meeting locals who gave us the intel that Super Paradise is dead and Elia is where we should spend our beach days. Saturday was packed, couldn't move, proper party atmosphere.
WORTH IT? Yes for at least one visit to understand the scene and get recommendations. Skip if you want affordable drinks or dancing, this is conversation and cruising not clubbing.
Babylon
- entry
- €10-15
- drinks
- €12-18
Sweaty basement club where actual locals go after Jackie O' gets boring
- Best for
- Late night dancing, meeting Greek guys, authentic gay scene
- Skip if
- You need air conditioning or personal space on the dance floor
- Don't miss
- Thursday and Saturday nights when it's properly packed
Small club on Kalogera Street, sweaty basement vibe, where people go after Jackie O' gets boring around 1-2am. We went once on Saturday, arrived 2am, stayed until 4am.
It's intimate (capacity roughly 150-200), mostly local Greek guys and some tourists who've done their research. The music was proper house not commercial remixes, everyone was dancing not posing, and it felt like actual club rather than Instagram backdrop.
Entry was €15 including first drink, subsequent drinks €12-18. Cash only, no card machine when we visited.
THE DETAILS:
- Opening: Midnight-6am Thursday-Sunday
- Entry: €10-15 with drink token
- Crowd: Mainly 25-40, predominantly Greek guys
- Music: House and techno, proper club sound system
- Best nights: Thursday and Saturday when it fills up
vs Other Options: This is where you go for actual dancing versus Jackie O' which is drinks and cruising. There's no other proper gay dance club in Mykonos Town.
WORTH IT? Yes if you want to dance and meet local crowd. Skip if you need air conditioning, personal space, or you're over 45 and done with basement clubs.
Porta Bar
Mixed bar in Little Venice that's become gay-frequented due to proximity to Jackie O' and welcoming vibe. We stopped in for one drink after dinner.
It's not specifically gay but lots of gay couples and the staff clearly know their audience. Good for early evening drinks (7-10pm) before the proper gay scene starts at 11pm. Sunset views over water if you grab terrace seats.
Cocktails €12-18, beer €8-10. Slightly cheaper than Jackie O' and less scene-y.
WORTH IT? As a warmup venue or if Jackie O' is too packed. Not worth making it your main stop.
Food Scene: Where to Eat
Restaurant prices in Mykonos are absurd. Budget €35-65 per person for sit-down dinner with one drink. Gyros and souvlaki joints cost €8-15 for takeaway, supermarket picnics €15-25 for two.
🍽️ Niko's Taverna
Local favourite near Megali Ammos Beach, 10min walk from town centre. We ate here twice because prices were reasonable (€18-32 mains) and food was excellent.
The grilled octopus (€28) was perfectly charred, Greek salad (€9) was massive and fresh, and the moussaka (€18) was authentic not tourist-version. Service was quick, staff didn't rush you, and other diners were mix of locals and savvy tourists.
Cost for two: €65-85 with house wine and dessert
WORTH IT? Absolutely. Book ahead for dinner or arrive before 8pm.
🍽️ Katerina's Restaurant & Cocktail Bar
In Little Venice with ridiculous sunset views, prices match the location. We splurged one night for anniversary dinner.
Mains €35-58, cocktails €18-24, but the setting over the water at sunset is properly special. The seafood pasta (€42) was excellent, grilled sea bass (€52) was fresh but overpriced.
Cost for two: €140-180 with cocktails and wine
vs Cheaper Options: You're paying €60-80 extra for the sunset view. Worth it once for special occasion, not for everyday dining.
WORTH IT? Once for the experience. Skip if budget-conscious, you'll resent spending €150 on dinner when Niko's delivers better value.
💰 Budget Options
Gyros at Jackie O' Beach: €8-12, actually decent quality, open late
Souvlaki near bus terminal: €10-15 for pita with fries and salad
Supermarket AB Vassilopoulos: €15-25 for picnic supplies for two
Bakery breakfast: €5-8 for coffee and pastry versus €18-28 hotel breakfast
We saved roughly €45/day eating one supermarket meal and one restaurant meal versus three restaurant meals. Over 11 nights that's €495 saved.
Is Mykonos Safe for LGBTQ+ Travellers?
Greece legalised same-sex marriage in February 2024, making it the first Orthodox Christian country to do so. Same-sex civil unions have been legal since 2015. Discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal.
Mykonos specifically is one of Europe's most gay-friendly destinations with established gay scene since the 1970s. The island's economy depends heavily on LGBTQ+ tourism so you'll find rainbow flags on businesses across town and beaches.
Our Experience:
We held hands walking through Mykonos Town, kissed goodbye at the bus terminal, and shared sunbeds at beaches without single negative reaction. Staff at hotels, restaurants, and bars treated us exactly like straight couples.
At Elia Beach the far right section is 90% gay and nobody cares about PDA. We saw couples kissing in the water, lying together on sunbeds, generally being themselves without any issues.
Jackie O' Town Bar and Babylon club are obviously gay spaces where everyone's out. We overheard conversations between Greek guys and tourists that suggested locals are completely comfortable with the gay scene, it's part of island identity not tolerated-but-hidden.
The only slight caution: very late night (4am+) in quiet streets away from Little Venice, be aware of your surroundings same as any destination. We didn't experience or witness any issues but general travel safety applies.
Getting Around Safely:
Buses are safe any time. Taxis are safe, drivers didn't react to two men sharing ride. Walking between Jackie O' and our hotel at 2-3am felt fine, streets were well-lit with other people around.
Beach transport is in daylight so no safety concerns. The walk from Elia Beach car park to far right gay section means passing straight beach-goers, nobody cared or commented.
Other LGBTQ+ Travellers:
We met gay couples from UK, Netherlands, Germany, US, and Australia. Several lesbians at Elia Beach and around town. One trans woman at Jackie O' who said she'd been visiting 5 years without issues. Everyone reported positive experiences
The Reality:
Mykonos is genuinely safe for LGBTQ+ travellers. The risk level is comparable to visiting Brighton or Sitges, the island's entire identity is built on being gay-welcoming. We felt safer being openly gay here than in parts of London or Manchester.
The only "safety" issue is avoiding getting ripped off by expensive venues, not any threat to your person or relationship.

FAQ: Your Questions Answered
What are the best gay hotels in Mykonos for 2026?
The best gay hotels depend on your budget and location preference. In Mykonos Town, Axel Beach Mykonos (€280-450/night) offers a dedicated gay atmosphere with pool and Skybar. For Elia Beach access, Due Mari Mykonos (€151-280/night) provides excellent value near the main gay beach. Luxury seekers should consider Myconian Kyma (€450-850/night) near Little Venice with Design Hotels membership and 5min walk to Jackie O' Town Bar. Budget-conscious travellers can book MyCocoon Hostel (€45-90/night), the island's only gay hostel in central Chora.
Which beaches in Mykonos are best for gay travellers?
Elia Beach is THE gay beach in Mykonos in 2026, with the far right section (marked by rainbow flag) being 90% gay and nude-friendly. It's 10km from Mykonos Town, 25min by car or infrequent bus. Super Paradise Beach is no longer predominantly gay, it's now 70% straight despite Jackie O' Beach Club presence. Sunbeds at Elia cost €15-25 for two, versus €20 each at Jackie O' Beach Club. Agrari Beach (5min walk from Elia over rocks) offers a quieter alternative with some gay sunbathers. The nude section between Elia and Agrari is the cruisiest spot on the island.
Where should gay couples stay in Mykonos for the first time?
First-timers should base themselves in Mykonos Town (Chora) to be within 5-10min walk of all gay bars including Jackie O' Town Bar and Babylon club. This avoids expensive taxis after midnight when buses stop. Budget €280-450/night for decent gay-friendly hotels in town like Axel Beach Mykonos or Elena Mykonos. Avoid staying near beaches unless you rent a car, as the last bus from Elia Beach leaves around 5-6pm. Book 3-4 months ahead for August XLSIOR festival (20-25 August 2026) when prices jump 40-70% and everything sells out.
Is Mykonos still worth visiting for gay travellers in 2026?
Yes, but manage expectations. Mykonos remains Europe's top gay island with excellent beach life at Elia and solid nightlife around Jackie O' Town Bar. However, prices have increased 22% since 2024, peak season hotels now average €315/night (up from €260), and Super Paradise Beach is no longer gay-dominated. The gay scene is smaller outside XLSIOR festival week (20-25 August 2026). If you're budget-conscious, consider visiting May-June or September-October when hotels drop 40-50% and Elia Beach is less crowded. Winter months see most gay venues closed.
What is the best time to book Mykonos gay hotels for 2026?
Book by January 2026 for August XLSIOR festival (20-25 August) when 30,000 people descend and prices spike 40-70%. For July-August peak season, book 3-4 months ahead to secure €280-350/night rates in town; waiting until June means paying €450-650/night. Shoulder season (May-June, September-October) offers best value with €180-280/night rates and same gay beach access. Book December-February only if comfortable with 60% of venues closed and rough seas making beaches unusable. Most budget-friendly option: late September with €150-220/night hotels and 24°C beach weather.
Do I need to rent a car in Mykonos?
Not essential but highly recommended for beach access. Buses to Elia Beach run every 2hrs with last service around 5-6pm, forcing you to leave the beach early or pay €25-35 taxis. ATV rental costs €40-50/day, car rental €60-80/day. If you're staying in Mykonos Town and planning 3+ beach days, rental pays for itself versus taxi costs. Walking everywhere in town is easy, 15-20min covers most areas. Skip car rental only if you're staying at beach hotel or happy with limited beach access.
Is Mykonos really that expensive?
Yes. Peak season hotels average €315/night (up from €260 in 2024), restaurant dinners cost €35-65 per person, and cocktails run €16-22. Budget €260-420 per person per day including accommodation. Cost-saving strategies: visit May-June or September-October (save 40-50% on hotels), eat one supermarket meal daily (save €45/day for two), pre-drink at hotel before bars (save €40-60 nightly), and book everything 3-4 months ahead. Seven nights for two costs €3,630-5,850 total depending on season and spending habits. It's expensive but comparable to Ibiza or Capri.
Our Final Take: Is Gay Mykonos Worth It in 2026?
Elia Beach is genuinely excellent with proper gay atmosphere, Jackie O' Town Bar and Babylon club provide solid nightlife, and XLSIOR brings 30,000 people for one spectacular week. The island itself is beautiful with perfect Cycladic aesthetic everyone photographs.
The downsides are real. Prices have jumped 22% in two years with no corresponding improvement in service or facilities. Super Paradise Beach is essentially finished as a gay destination. Budget under €260/day per person and you'll struggle to enjoy yourself properly.
Book Mykonos if: You're after guaranteed gay beach life at Europe's best gay beach (Elia), you appreciate Greek island aesthetic, you can afford €3,630-5,850 for two for 7 nights, or you're specifically attending XLSIOR festival.
Skip Mykonos if: You're budget-conscious (visit Sitges or Gran Canaria instead), you want year-round gay scene (it closes November-April), you're expecting 2015-era massive gay crowds everywhere, or you prefer destinations where luxury feels justified not exploitative.
Our recommendation? Visit once for the experience, preferably May-June or September-October when prices drop 40% but beaches and bars remain excellent. Stay in Mykonos Town to access nightlife easily. Spend full days at Elia Beach far right section. Rent ATV for transport flexibility. Budget realistically and book everything 3-4 months ahead.
